I'm not sure any serious photographer's are using JPEG anymore unless there is a specific purpose. For instance if I'm shooting news I shoot JPEG+RAW so I can send out the .jpg files immediately and then edit the RAW files for actual usage. If it's anything else I just simply shoot RAW & keep the file as flexible as possible until the very, very end of the workflow when I either email, upload or or print.

I usually shoot RAW + JPG for portraits and weddings (and even for some personal projects). I use JPG only for "lite" stuff that has minimal editing, like birthday parties.

I shoot exclusively in RAW; I used to do JPG+RAW but I'm not on the kinda deadlines that require the speed of JPG
  • Kevin · 11 months ago
I always shoot RAW, unless I know I'm just using the shots as "scouting" photos and not doing any post work on them, or directly emailing the images. Space is relatively cheap. Why sacrifice data?

I've shot RAW since I got one of the first Canon 1D bodies in Wales. Can't even remember the year now - it seems so long ago.

    Now shooting a 1DMkII and 5D.

I only ever shoot RAW+JPEG when I know I'm going to have to transmit from location on a tight deadline. My aging Powerbook is not up to quick RAW processing of 5D files :-( otherwise I'd shoot RAW then too.

Using Aperture for all RAW file processing. It makes the RAW workflow BETTER than a JPEG workflow.

I like the exposure latitude that RAW gives me, and being able to "redevelop" the image if I don't like my first attempt is wonderful! It takes a little longer at the computer, but the results are worth it. Initally I shot in JPEG, and looking back at some of those early efforts I wish I'd gone RAW from the beginning.

I shoot Nikon and always RAW (NEF, Nikon's RAW). However, I feel that Nikon and other camera makers, including Canon, need to get on the Adobe DNG (digital negative raw) bandwagon and give us the choice to record DNG in-camera. In-camera TIFF is good, NEF is better and DNG raw format would be superb! No more compatibility issues with Photoshop when we upgrade our cameras. No more cross platform issues in post-processing. Greatly reduced worries about not being able to read today's RAW captures several years down the road.

"RAW forever" but I'm hoping for DNG in-camera.
  • Patrick Connor · 8 months ago
I shoot in RAW to get the maximum data out of my image file. I utilize Aperture 2 for importing, organizing and any initial tweaking of the image. Just recently I've started utilizing NIK plug-ins for Aperture which work great. At some point I will export my image into Photoshop for any retouching or editing using layers. It sounds like many steps but it's not...I ensure that I'm using software for only minor enhancements and that all of the work was actually done in my camera through proper exposure and mastering lighting my subject.

I can understand the notion of shooting JPEG for those using small sensor'd P&S cameras, as the tradeoff between speed/memory & post-process workflow doesn't really add up, but to anyone using a semi-decent DSLR, RAW offers ridiculous degrees of freedom to develop a shot whatever way you desire. I have found myself opening up almost by almost 2 stops without reducing the pixel level quality many times & nailing the WB in post is just so much easier (and for me, faster) than setting it up manually while you shoot.

If you have a dSLR & most specifically if you're using something like Lightroom or Aperture, then you really are doing yourself a disservice by not shooting RAW.

RAW is the only way to shoot! I never take my Canon out of RAW mode. My 20D is only 8mp, so the files are still pretty manageable in size. Once I upgrade to the 5d mkii I will feel bad for my hard drive...might have to buy a 1 TB along with the camera upgrade.

I resisted for a while when I first switched to digital, but once I switched I regretted not doing it from day 1. I see processing my RAW files akin to "developing" in my old film workflow. Once you've got a few automated tasks set up, the process is really quite natural and simple and it gives unparalleled control and most definitely better quality.

I recently moved from shooting in JPG + RAW to RAW only. I delayed the move to RAW only until I became more familiar with the full functionality of my post-processing program (Nikon Capture NX2). It's not until you see what JPG throws out that you really gain an appreciation for all the information available in the RAW format. Like some others have commented, I am considering a high-end point and shoot, and look at the specs to make sure it captures in RAW.

    Great concept for a site.

I always shoot RAW. My clienst require it.

I've heard the theory that shooting JPG forces you to shoot carefully, but I don't buy it. Shoot carefully anyway & get more from you pics with RAW.

After years of dodging the hurdle of space, I have finally embraced the RAW file format. And not just any raw file format will work for my learned clients. It has to be Nikon (NEF). With Capture NX 2, I have so much of my work completed before I even get to Photoshop. Its retarded how much control you have. I can physically see the difference in my print pieces. To be able to look at a print project and be able to tell what was shot in RAW and what wasn't astounds me. I'm not going back! You can't make me go back!

I love shooting in RAW. It makes my white balance corrections so much easier.

I shoot in RAW because I make the decisions about how to process my images. Shooting in RAW gives me flexibility.

I´ve shot RAW almost from the first time I took my first DSLR out. The flexibility in tweaking the image with all of the information still intact is just too great to settle for a jpeg version.

I've been shooting RAW since 2004. These days I'm converting RAW to DNG with embedded RAW.

RAW is the equivalent of negative in the film world for me. Do you throw away your negatives after you have made paper prints? I don't.

Shoot RAW, convert to DNG upon import into LightRoom.
  • David Phillips · 4 months ago
I always shoot in RAW and only convert when needed.

I hate ugly JPGs, I hate setting white balance, I hate the poor 8-bit precision of JPG images which makes them so hard to edit!!! And that's why << I SHOOT IN RAW! >> Editing RAW is like sitting in a private darkroom, where I can develop a vast variety photos from one negative, and image quality is always outstanding!

I just started shooting in "jaw dropping" RAW, it's a brand new toy I love it.

I shoot RAW everytime (since using my DSLR seriously) then convert to DNG on import to Lightroom. Flickr: http://trunc.it/1fxl1

Raw is the only way to go, too much information is lost when using JPG compression, plus the flexibility and post processing control with raw is simply divine!
  • kellynavea · 4 months ago
yep i did shoot raw for this set of photos. After tweaking the raw settings I edited some on lightroom (number2).

JPG? It's an output-only format, friends.

I only shoot in RAW with my DSLR, this gives me far more flexibility in developing my photos. After shooting, I convert my photos into DNG with Adobe Camera Raw.

I shoot in Raw because I prefer to spend 10 min tweaking a photograph in my computer than spending 1 min setting the proper parameters in my camera

I shoot in RAW because of the info. When on the computer screen I see details that I didn't know existed sometimes. On my EOS 500D, RAW rules.

Life Through Lenses Photography shoots in exclusively in Raw...I then process my files in Adobe Camera Raw and fine tune in Photoshop. I invite you to my website to view my work! Thanks to www.ishootinraw.com for providing this forum!
